Map editor

Dungeondraft-grade map authoring inside the VTT: the rail and the Draw, Build and Objects groups, the map Library, stamps and scatter, paths, roofs, layers, the 250 MB quota and Dungeondraft import.

Roliando ships a Dungeondraft-grade map editor inside the VTT itself: you paint floors, raise walls, place props, lay paths and set lights on your combat map. Only the GM uses it, and it doesn't open in a separate window: its controls appear over the map in Combat mode.

How it's laid out

  • A vertical rail on the left with the tools (icons with their name on mouse hover).
  • Three groups that open their panel when clicked: Draw, Build and Objects.
  • Windows you drag by their header, resize, and that remember where you left them: the Map library, Layers, Floors, the settings, and the tool groups too.

The rail also has Move / navigate, Select several, Pick a target, Measure distance, Laser pointer, Erase and Scenes and encounter (switch scene, new, templates, player control). Buttons with a corner notch open a menu.

If you can't find something, the magnifier at the top of the rail (or Ctrl+K) finds any map option as you type (“fog”, “wall”, “import Foundry”) and tells you where it lives.

Bringing the table's view to a spot

On a big map, pointing at things while you describe them gets awkward. There are two ways to move everyone's camera where you want:

  • "Bring everyone's view here" (rail, GM only): frame the area and click. Your players' camera travels to the center of what you're looking at. Each one keeps their zoom, so nobody loses the framing they had set up.
  • Drag ping: hold down on the background with Shift (GM, Move tool). The ping ripple shows and the camera follows it. Useful for pointing at a specific spot that isn't the center of your view. On tablet or phone there's no Shift: use the button there.

A normal ping (holding down without Shift, and anyone can do it) only paints the ripple: it points without moving anyone's view.

Draw

The Draw group is for marking on the map: Draw (freehand stroke, line, rectangle or ellipse, filled or not), Text, area Template, Note, and the Fog (cover/Reveal). You can fill a drawing with a texture from the gallery.

Build

The Build group is the map's structure:

ToolWhat it does
WallChained walls (block vision and movement).
DoorDoor or window anchored to a wall.
CoverAn obstacle that blocks movement but lets you see and shoot.
SplitSplits a wall in two.
ShapeA whole room of walls at once (rectangle, square, circle or triangle).
LightLight sources (with presets Torch / Lantern / Candle / Magical / Daylight).
FloorPaint the floor with a Brush, a Bucket (fills the room) or Material on top.
PortalTeleports and travel zones.
PathRivers and roads: a tiled texture along the stroke.
SoundPositional ambient sound.

Detect walls generates walls automatically from the map image (with Auto, Strokes or Cave modes and a sensitivity control; then Apply or Discard).

The details on walls, vision, light, cover and portals have their own guide: Walls, vision and cover.

Objects

The Objects group populates the map with props:

  • Place (stamp): you put down an object click by click, with fixed or random rotation and snap to grid.
  • Scatter: you spray several props at once, with Density and Radius.
  • Shape: you fill a rectangle or ellipse with a texture (tiled or stretched).
  • Prefabs are pre-assembled groups of objects you drop in one go.

The Map library

The Props and library button opens the Map library, with Floors, Walls, Props and My assets tabs. It ships with included textures (Kenney, CC0; and an old-school set by neovatar, CC BY) plus everything you upload.

Each asset has a type (kind): Prop, Floor, Wall, Material, Path, Door, Pattern, Roof and Light. The type decides how it's placed. For example, a Roof goes to an upper layer that fades away when you walk underneath.

Uploading your own (My assets)

In My assets you upload files, a whole folder or a Dungeondraft Pack (.dungeondraft_pack). When importing a pack, a full-screen viewer lets you filter by type, search and pick which groups you want; only what's selected is compressed and uploaded.

  • You have a quota of 250 MB of assets (a bar shows the space used). Delete things to free up room.
  • Everything is compressed to webp on upload (floors and walls at 512 px, props at 768 px), so it takes little space without looking bad. The map background is saved at higher quality.

Upload only art you have the rights to (personal purchase, CC0, or your own art). Roliando is asset-agnostic: it doesn't distribute copyrighted art; use your own.

Layers

The Layers panel turns each level of the map on and off in your view (it doesn't change what players see): Floors, Paths, Tiles / images, Drawings, Walls, Lights and Tokens. A layer's padlock makes the eraser and the selection ignore it, so you can edit without touching it.

Importing maps from elsewhere

Besides Dungeondraft packs, from the Map menu you can Import map (Foundry/VTT) and Align Foundry walls (bring the walls of a Foundry scene and fit them to the background). See the Importing content guide for the details.
