The world Map
Maps, places and maps inside maps: the same map in Map and in World, zooming from the Coast into Phandalin and the crypt, zones, scale and travel, and taking any map to combat.
The campaign's Map tab is the world map: an image (or a video) with the places that matter, the routes the party travels, where they are now and whatever the GM draws on top. The combat map is separate and lives in Combat (though any map here can be taken there, see below).
A map is one single thing, even though you see it in two places: in Map, with every tool, and in World → Maps, as its wiki page (description, notes, links). Creating it in either creates the other; changing the name, the image or whether it's hidden changes both; and deleting one deletes the other. Pins and zones are the same on both sides.
Several maps
The selector in the toolbar (the name of the map you're looking at) opens Campaign maps: the main map, the others, their folders and New map. Each map has its own places, routes, scale, art and markers. From there you also rename them, hide them from players or delete them (Delete map takes everything on it and its World page).
To set the image: Load map. An empty map also offers Or open one of your maps.
From World, a map's page has Open in the Map, and a place's page View on the world map, which takes you to the map where its pin is even if it isn't the one you had open.
Places
Each pin is a place and has its page in World → Places: what you write in one shows in the other. A place has one pin in the whole campaign. On the pin you choose icon, color, whether players see it and from which zoom it appears.
Inside a place: a plan or a whole map
On the pin, Inside there is:
- A plan (image): the Interior floor plan of a city or a cave. Its points are marked with Mark points inside.
- The map «…» (with its pins, routes and scale): another campaign map, complete. Maps can nest without limit: the Sword Coast has a pin that is the map of Phandalin, and Phandalin a pin that is the map of the crypt.
Size of the plan inside the map sets how much it takes up on the outer map. Zooming in on the pin, the plan shows up when it nearly fills the screen and, once it does, you're in: the selector and the breadcrumbs (Coast › Phandalin) say where you are. Zooming out takes you back outside in the same spot. You also enter with Enter the map in the pin's detail, and the breadcrumbs take you back to any level.
An inner map without its own scale inherits the outer one: the travel calculator keeps measuring right inside the city.
Zones
Regions, realms, districts: Zones in the toolbar opens the map's page with its editor (a click per vertex, they snap to neighbours; Edit borders to move vertices). On the Map they show as the Zones layer, and tapping one opens its entry.
Scale, routes and travel
Calibrate scale: mark two points and say how far apart they are (km, miles, leagues…). Routes measure with that scale and the Travel calculator says how long it takes on foot, on horseback or at your own pace. Inside a plan there's no calibrating: it uses the outer map's.
Layers
Layers decides what's drawn on your screen: Routes, Places, Zones, pieces, drawings, markers. It doesn't change what others see.
From the map to combat
Use in combat creates an encounter with this map's image as background and a 70 px per square grid (the one most battlemaps use; if your drawing has another, adjust it with «Align to map» in Combat), and opens it in Combat. It stays linked: next time the button says Open its combat. With the dungeon as a pin-map, go into it and use it in combat from there.
A pin can also point to an encounter you already have: Its tactical map (combat).
Showing and hiding
Players don't see a hidden map or anything on it. When you reveal a map in World, if there are still hidden pins or zones on it, it asks whether to show them too (with their places). Anything you hid on purpose can stay hidden.
Known limits
- A video map can't be used as a combat scene yet.
- A pin-map inside a plan (the image kind) doesn't enter with the zoom: enter with the button in its detail.
- Zones are drawn on the map's page (it opens on top with Zones), not directly on the Map.
Common problems
- I can't see a map the GM created. It's hidden: the GM shows it in Campaign maps.
- Zooming in doesn't take me into the pin. The pin needs Inside there is with a plan or a map, and the centre of the screen has to be over it.
- A place won't let me pin it. It already has a pin, on this map or another: find it with View on the world map.
