Map builder: from template to table

Start from a template (continent, region, city, dungeon or battle map), Commands with Ctrl K, quick terrain, 3D view, locations, World pins, editing together, export and what each plan includes.

The map builder in Creations → Map Builder draws anything from a whole world to a one-room dungeon. This guide walks the full path: start from a template, generate terrain, paint, view the map in 3D, place locations and pins, work together and take it to the table. The Map Builder guide explains the painting tools one by one.

Start from a template

When you create a map you can start from a template. Each brings its size, scale and grid and offers you the first step:

  • Continent: 80×60 cells of 50 km over ocean. Opens Quick terrain with the continent shape.
  • Region: 60×40 cells of 5 km over ocean. Opens Quick terrain with the region shape.
  • City: 60×40 cells of 10 m. Leaves the city generator selected in the generate panel.
  • Dungeon: 40×30 cells of 1.5 m with the grid showing. Leaves the dungeon generator selected.
  • Battle map: 30×20 cells of 1.5 m with a snapping grid and the brush ready.

Templates are also in Commands (Ctrl K): type "new map" and pick the kind. Everything a template sets can be changed later.

Commands (Ctrl K)

With the editor open, Ctrl K (or the Commands (Ctrl K) button in the header) opens the palette: switch tool, Export, fit to screen, undo and redo, the grid, View in 3D, Quick terrain and Replay the course. Type, move with the arrows and choose with Enter. Each tool's keyboard shortcut can be changed in the shortcuts panel.

Generate terrain

Quick terrain takes an empty map to terrain with relief in four steps: shape, climate, settlements and style. Every step shows real thumbnails of the current seed; the die changes the seed (the same seed gives the same map anywhere). Everything lands in the map as a single undo step. The Generate panel does the same with more controls and also has the location tabs: village, crossroads, city, dungeon and cave.

View the map in 3D

View in 3D (Alt+3) opens a view where the terrain has relief, textured materials, trees, rocks, buildings, water and daylight. What you paint in 2D shows at once; time of day, weather and favourite cameras are saved with the map. With "reduce motion" on in your system the camera does not sway.

Interiors and locations

Interior locations (dungeon, cave, castle) come with walls, doors and lights for the table. You can change their theme, regenerate one room without touching the rest, and from a map pin you can generate the location into a linked child map.

Pins, regions and World

Pins and regions on the map can be World entries: they open the entry, show its relations and can be shared. Draw a region, name it and pick one of its six label and border styles.

Work together

If the map belongs to a campaign with co-GMs, several people edit it at once: you see cursors and the soft locks on what each one is touching, and changes converge without overwriting each other.

Export and take it to the table

Export downloads the image (WebP or PNG) at maximum, native, high or medium quality, or the editable project. Worldmap of… sets it as a campaign worldmap and Publish takes it to the Workshop.

What each plan includes

  • Free GM: one map of your own with the whole editor (generators, 3D, locations, styles), export up to 8192 px per side and 1K textures. What you already have can always be edited, exported and deleted.
  • Master Legend: unlimited maps, export with no size cap and 2K textures.

When a quality goes over your plan's cap the export window says so and drops to what fits.

Styles and recipes in the Workshop

A style keeps a map's materials, look and palette; a recipe keeps a generator's parameters with its seed. They are published in the Maps category of the Workshop, free for now, and whoever gets one receives a copy in their library. They do not count as a map of your own.

If something goes wrong

  • 3D does not start: it needs WebGL; the 2D editor keeps working the same.
  • It will not let me create another map: the free plan includes one of your own; delete one you do not use or move to Legend.
  • The export is smaller than I asked for: that is your plan's cap, and the window says so.
